Endodontic Mycology: A New Perspective of Root Canal Infection

چکیده

An important consideration in endodontic treatment is the elimination of microorganisms, including fungi, from the complex threedimensional root canal system. Yeasts can be detected in 7-17% of infected root canals. Candida albicans (CA) has a major role in endodontic treatment failure as the most important fungus isolated from the root canal system. C. albicans has been associated with root canal infections resistant to non-surgical therapy and a potent pathogen to infect periapical lesions. They are commonly associated with persistent cases of apical periodontitis, but yeasts can also be isolated in primary apical periodontitis. A variety of virulence factors enable C. albicans to adhere to and penetrate into dentine. Yeasts do not respond favourably to conservative root canal therapy, due to resistance against a commonly used medicament, calcium hydroxide. Thus, alternative therapeutic approaches and other intracanal medicaments are required to treat persistent cases of apical periodontitis.

Detection of Treponema denticola in root canal systems in primary and secondary endodontic infections. A correlation with clinical symptoms.

AIM The aim of the study was to investigate the presence of Treponema denticola in primary and secondary root-infected canal systems with periapical pathology and correlations with clinical signs and symptoms. METHODOLOGY Endodontic samples were obtained from canals of 102 teeth: 79 had primary endodontic disease and 23 secondary endodontic disease. For each tooth, clinical data including sym...

Endodontic Retreatment of a Maxillary First Molar with Unusual Palatal Root Canal Morphology: A Case Report

Introdouction: Variations in root canal morphology pose a challenge for successful endodontic treatment. The root canal anatomy of the maxillary first molar has been often described as three roots with four canals (two mesiobuccal, one distobuccal, and one palatal). The occurrence of two palatal canals in one palatal root is quite rare. This report represents the case of a maxillary first molar...

Redefining the persistent infection in root canals: possible role of biofilm communities.

Current concepts suggest that persisting infections subsequent to endodontic therapy are caused by one or two bacterial species that are "too robust" to be eliminated by conventional treatment measures. As a consequence, numerous studies are exploring the characteristics of these "most" resistant organisms to define an effective treatment strategy to eradicate them from root canals. By taking a...

In vitro antimicrobial effect of different root canal sealers against oral pathogens

Background and Purpose: Root canal therapy is the primary method for the treatment of an infected pulp in modern dentistry. The main aim of endodontic treatment is the elimination of bacteria and their products from infected root canals. In this study, we attempted to investigate the antimicrobial activity of three root canal sealers against oral pathogens. Materials and Methods: The antimic...
